Flaring or "Mushrooming" Fiber Optic Filament

Flaring the end of the fiber will give it a wider viewing angle.  Flaring random fibers can add a bit of variety in a 'star ceiling'.  Helping to create the illusion that some of the 'stars' are closer than others.

Flaring fiber optic fibers is easily done with a candle as shown in the photos.  Of course, you'll want to use caution ANY time you work with an open flame!

Perhaps a safer method for flaring the fibers is to use a hot soldering iron.
