Modeling Clay and Fiber Optics

Created, written and submitted by Nicholas

“My dad bought me fiber optic filament from your online store, and this is what I came up with.”  Nicholas

photo-01First I’d start off with a sculpture like the one I made with Sculpey Modeling Clay.

Make sure to cook it before you start. It is very small, you can see the pennies next to it. It’s better to keep it small so you can do the next step easier.

photo-02Then use a needle to drill tiny holes in the base so you can bring up the filaments.  An easy idea is to bring up many strands in a group and then they can simulate a tiny fire if you add a little orange and yellow coloring to them.

photo-03You will need to make a box somehow where you could add your LED light, ask someone for help on how to do this. The box can be made out of simple cardboard if you aren’t good with wood work, I spray painted mine on the outside.

photo-04Mount the sculpture on the small box where the LED is and insert the .25mm fiber optic filaments into your sculpture and add a tiny amount paint to the outside so it blends in to the sculpture and also acts as a glue to keep it in place. (If you want you can add a little glue, just to be safe.)

photos-gifAnd finally its finished, a perfect scene. Lit by tiny lights which wouldn’t be possible without the use of fiber optics.

Thank you Nicholas, for a VERY unique and wonderful contribution!
