Here is my rendition of “Robby The Robot” from the movie, “Forbidden Planet”.
I feel that Forbidden Planet was such an awesome movie, especially considering that it was filmed in 1956! I watched this when I was a kid, and it inspired me to build this diorama. I tried to replicate the scene from one of the early movie posters.
In his arms, Robby the Robot is holding Morbeus’ daughter – Altaira.
Robby the Robot is a plastic kit and Altaira is a Resin Garage kit.
I combined the two kits and then built a custom base using cardboard.
I used your single strand end glow fiber optic filament along with my own LEDs to provide the illumination for Robby.
To give Robby some animation I used a small microprocessor (PIC) to control the sequencing of all the lights that were created from your fiber optic filament.
I feel that Robby the Robot is the quintessential robot of all time, paving the way for many others such as B9 (Lost in Space c.1965) and of course R2D2 (Star Wars c.1977)
By the way: I learned many of the tips and tricks for working with fiber optics from your web site!
Thank YOU Mark for sharing this awesome custom build with us! We can’t wait to pop some popcorn and que up “Forbidden Planet”.
