As you sit at the Main Control panels, you’ll see the vast uncharted universe stretching out before you. The star field in The Space Place is the cornerstone of our project. When it comes to “grabbing your attention”, the star field takes a backseat to the control panels. However in the “ohhs and ahhs” category, the star field always finishes first!
The photo to the left shows you how the “windows” actually curve over the pilots head. While difficult to see in this photo, the ‘star field’ also extends above your head. The reflective qualities of the Plexiglas add to the on stage illusion. The “blue” image in the right window is actually the blue wall light between the sleeping pods.
Perhaps even more amazing is the fact that, in reality, this “universe” is only 3 inches deep! To see how we accomplished this, using fiber optic cable and ordinary materials, be sure to visit “The Stars off stage” area.
